Wow! That Heat…

Wow. That heat. It focussed my mind. What more can I do about global warming?

So glad to find that there's more than I first thought - check out the Hot Nuggets below...

"Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better "- Maya Angelou

I almost didn't send this email.

Too embarassed.

But, as I'm all about sharing honestly, and embracing the reality that life isn't perfect - here goes...

I did it again.

Ignored my needs, to the detriment of my health.

Last time it was burnout, this time it was heatstroke.

(For those outside the UK, last week we endured a record-breaking heatwave.)

It's all very well knowing the facts (most of us do). I knew some stuff about avoiding heatstroke.

But, here's the kicker - I didn't apply this knowledge in full.

Why?

Because I believed feeling hot and sleepy on the hottest day of the year was just 'part of the deal'.

Because I told myself - as I got hotter and hotter - that I just had to 'put up with it'.

I had adopted some strategies: I stayed in, windows open, blinds down, fan on, drinking water.

But when, despite this, I got hotter and more unwell, I took no heed.

The outcome?

Fast forward to last Monday afternoon.

Sitting on the bathroom floor for hours, not wanting to stray too far due to unrelenting nausea.

And some other symptoms which I won't describe! (you can probably guess...)

Not pretty.

OK. So why am I sharing this?

Because it really got me thinking:

How can we keep ourselves well in the face of mounting challenges?

They can be soaring temperatures or soaring workplace demands - the themes are the same:

  • Listen to your body, your mind, your instincts.

  • If things don't feel right - take action.

  • If you are using strategies, and still not doing well, review and take more action.

  • If you are not sure - ask.

  • If you are not doing well - get help.

And - to end my sorry tale, that is what I did.

Finally, I listened to myself. Got help. Asked questions. Implemented more strategies.

And got better.

How well do you listen to yourself?
