See you in the Café

Coffee Shop Menu

Fancy a hot drink?

Which do you prefer?

‘A cup of tea’ -  puts me in mind of a good chat.

‘A shot of expresso’ - suggests a quick boost.

I love browsing a café menu, selecting the drink that feels right…

…and it’s a great metaphor for our communication options, in this crazy hybrid world;

-          at one end of the menu, we have emails - the ‘expressos’- great for firing off a quick chunk of info.

-          at the other, we have the real-life chat – a bit like ‘a cup of tea’ - best suited to more complex conversations.

How often do you pause to ‘browse the menu’ and choose your mode of communication?

(If you do - fantastic! See you in the café😊)

Tea for two…

We discussed this recently in a workshop I ran.

There has been a shift to more fact-based communication since the pandemic.

More emails.

Less chat.

It’s tempting to ping off an email or a newsletter without too much thought at times (though I sometimes do…)

- Often it can feel like there simply ‘isn’t time’ for the other options.

- Or email communication has become embedded in our workplace culture.

- Sometimes it can feel easier to fire off an email to avoid that tricky conversation… (done that! - it didn’t end well…)

Trouble is, for many of us, too many emails leave us feeling a bit - well - disconnected…

We know time can be saved in the long run, by using more personal communication styles to foster good team dynamics.

And they can be more fun too…

So, I’ve been reminding myself to browse my menu of communication options…

With that, I’m off for a cuppa 😊

A little nod to Valentine’s Day…
