What does Halloween mean to you?

The lighter side of Halloween

Hi guys,

How are you finding the change of the seasons?

I love autumn with its crisp air and invitation to create cosy warm spaces after time outside.

A lighter take on Halloween

What does Halloween mean to you?

For some of us it's all about the community connection and family fun with silly costumes and a surfeit of sugar.

Others are not so keen, as they see the connotations of darkness and celebration of 'tricks' and evil doings as something to avoid.

The Celtic Wheel of the Year marks 'Samhain' - a time when the veil between the living and the dead grew thin. In days past Celts lit bonfires and wore costumes to confuse the ghosts who came to walk amongst them.

Some Christians see it as a vigil before All Saints Day - a time to reflect and honour the dead, while others replace it with more positive or seasonally themed 'light parties'.

I expect my pumpkin deely-boppers are a bit of a giveaway as to my perspective, though I also pause to reflect on those who have gone before us.

Halloween shows us how one event can be interpreted many ways, and the influence this has.

This holds true when we think about other important life events like career change, returning to work or stepping up as a new leader.

The significance we attach has a huge impact on how we feel and act, which in turn has a downstream effect on the outcome.

We cannot always control the event, but we often have a degree of choice over the perspective we take.

This lies at the core of the coaching and training I offer, and is why I love it so much.

Your stories are endlessly fascinating and helping folk like you work through your story is hugely rewarding. Supporting you as you navigate these changes is what I am all about.
