What is important to you?

Hi guys

I connected with some wonderful humans who came to my creative writing workshop recently.

It was like a refreshing drink of cool water; creating a safe space to reflect, share and recharge...

What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important
— Dwight Eisenhower

Autumn Recharge Retreat - a chance to reflect

..and I was really glad I did - as the following week was manic!

How was your week? Mine was packed with unlooked for, unplanned events...

We have hall had them.

Those times when you are in fire fighting mode, lurching from one crisis to the next with no time to catch your breath.

Working in the NHS can sometimes feel like this is 'normal'. (It's not).

It can feel hard to know how to improve things.

Small incremental steps can help;

Pausing to notice you are in fire fighting mode.

Then making the choice to carve out some time for the not urgent but important stuff.

Knowing we can't sustain ourselves without this. It's this stuff that keeps us going.

Appraisals and tax returns are easier when planned out instead of sweating just before the deadline.

You can skip healthy eating and sufficient sleep for a bit, but over time the costs pile up.

For me running retreats is another - they are not urgent but really important. It is so helpful to know you have a safe space coming up to step away from it all.

Following a retreat you return refreshed with renewed purpose having made great connections with some wonderful people.

How much time do you have for the important - not - urgent stuff?

Not much I imagine.

No one is handing you this time on a silver platter.

You have to carve it out for yourself.

Maybe it's 5 minutes a day, or booking a day of annual leave to go on retreat.

Eisenhower reputedly used this approach-so its gotta be worth a try - right?

How will you carve out time for your important-not-urgent stuff?
