Heatstroke is a metaphor for Burnout
Hi guys,
It's getting pretty warm and toasty here in the UK summer - what are you doing to keep cool?
““When you go through things like Burnout, You know what to do and not to do, in the future””
How do you feel about hot weather?
I used to love the sun and basked as much as possible.
Then last year I got heatstroke - which wasn't much fun.
I still love the summer vibe; languid evenings, wild swims and barbecues with family & friends .
It makes some things simpler. I went swimming in our local lake recently without a wetsuit which was waaay easier.
But sitting in a hot room, working, allowing yourself to get hotter, and then even more uncomfortably hot is not so fun.
The day I got heatstroke I thought had everything I needed to keep cool - including shade, a fan and hydration - but this wasn't enough.
I felt myself getting hotter - and didn't like the feeling - but I thought there was nothing else I could do.
So I put up with it and carried on working for so long I got heatstroke.
Luckily I recovered and now approach hot weather with a better toolkit of strategies.
Heatstroke is a great metaphor for Burnout, as the journey through both can follow a similar pattern;
You feel the pressure build from demands at home and at work.
You know it doesn't feel right so you put a few strategies in place.
Despite this, you see your stress build and your Resilience ebb - but think "there's nothing else I can do."
A key part of my recovery from Burnout was learning about all the things I could do that I hadn't done the first time round.
I went out and learnt extra strategies, mindset shifts, and made better decisions about home and work life to provide some much needed support.
The whole experience of Burnout was so rubbish I founded the Working Well Doctor to share these strategies and help others avoid some of the mistakes I made.
At the Working Well Doctor we don't just focus on avoiding Burnout but crafting a way to live and work that sustains us through the inevitable changes life throws our way.
We use 1:1 Bespoke Leadership and Career Coaching programmes, and keynotes and workshops on specific topics for groups to encourage everyone to navigate their working lives so they can enjoy the sun without getting burnt.
If any of this resonates, hit reply to let me know your thoughts - I always love to hear from you
Till next time,
Take Care
