How Many Spoons do You Have?

Hi there,

It's the end of the week - how are your energy levels?

"Spoon theory taught me that energy is currency — spend it wisely."

- Concept attibuted to Christine Miserandino.

How many spoons do you have today?

Christine Miserandino coined a great phrase when she wrote about the limited energy she has due to Lupus, and how she has to prioritise and plan what she will spend her energy on.

A handful of spoons became a metaphor for a finite amount of energy she starts each day with, and she describes how each of her actions, from cooking to travelling uses up a precious spoon.

The concept has been widely adopted by many seeking to show how chronic illness and disability constricts daily life choices.

The idea can be useful for anyone with limited capacity - including those of us in mid-life with kids, work and perimenopause to juggle.

Even without a defined diagnosis, the idea of being intentional about where we use our energy can help sustain us.

Sometimes we can feel too guilty or overwhelmed to make the choices needed to avoid running out of spoons.

These themes crop up time and again when I work with mid-life medics.

Coaching is a powerful way to reflect and work out how best to spend your spoons.

Ping me a line to talk it over if you fancy, I love hearing from you.

Till next time,

Take Care
